Connections

One map of who is connected to whom in the Chicago City Council's public records: alderpersons, committees, key legislation, campaign donors and their employers, lobbyists, and the clients who hire them. Every line is a documented relationship: a committee seat, a sponsorship, a divided vote, a campaign contribution, a lobbying registration, or a lobbying filing matched to legislation.

The map holds 14,400 people, organizations, and pieces of legislation and 35,303 relationships; this page shows the 673 most connected. Positions in the network are learned from the relationships themselves, so the page can show which members, donors, or lobbyists sit in the most similar places: funded by the same donors, lobbied by the same clients, voting alongside the same colleagues.

How it is built

Nodes and typed edges from public records (committee rosters, sponsorships, divided roll calls, ISBE contributions since 2019, Board of Ethics lobbying since 2023, lobbying matched to legislation). Embeddings: spectral embedding of the normalized adjacency with one- and two-step walks (64 dimensions); similar nodes are nearest by cosine. Communities: weighted label propagation. Layout: force-directed. Connections are not evidence of wrongdoing.

Data: graph.json. API: `/api/v1/graph`, `/api/v1/graph/nodes/{id}`, and `/api/v1/graph/nodes/{id}/similar` (see the developer guide).
