[10:35](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=635) and it is my pleasure to introduce Officer Shannon Megan, the spokesperson for today's graduating classes, who will deliver the graduation address. Good morning. Good morning. I'm truly honored to stand in front of you today.

[11:05](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=665) First, I would like to thank all the instructors and personnel at the Academy who are an introduction to the Chicago Police Department. I would also like to thank our Superintendent, Larry Snelling, and our Mayor, Brandon Johnson, for being here today. Lastly, I would like to thank our friends and family who have joined us to celebrate and those who could not be here this morning for supporting this achievement every step of the way. To our graduating classes, congratulations. As we start our career with the Chicago Police Department,

[11:38](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=698) I want to remind you of when we all began this journey with the people sitting to the left and right of you. We all began this program with different backgrounds, life experiences, and knowledge to bring to the table. The days were long, but as we progressed through our training, no matter our differences in the beginning, the officers in this room became our family. To the class of 24-2 boy, I wouldn't be standing here without you today. We are always told that we should be able to lean on our brothers and sisters, and I'm proud to say that I know we are stronger together.

[12:11](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=731) Our new, everyday, and the responsibility that comes with taking on this role would not be possible without the brave men and women that came before us. Being a part of the Chicago Police Department is something that I take immense pride in. Each day we put on our uniform, let us remember that we are entrusted with serving and protecting our city and upholding the expectations that are bestowed upon us. May we always remember to remain vigilant and dedicated to serving our city. To the class of 24-1, 24-2, 24-3, and 24-4, I hope for a very long, safe, and successful career,

[12:49](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=769) and I hope that you always remember your why. God bless the city of Chicago and everyone that we protect. Thank you.

[13:33](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=813) Thank you, Officer Megan. Superintendent Larry Snelling will now address today's honorees. Good morning. I like that sound. Let's do it again. Good morning. Good morning, sir. Very good. First off, thank you to the families who are here to support everyone,

[14:03](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=843) From our newly hired officers to our field training officers, our detectives, sergeants, lieutenants, new captain, commander, and deputy chief. All great achievements for not just a job, but a profession, a calling. It's extremely important to understand that. There are people who depend on you as police officers. So with that, I'm going to address directly the graduating class.

[14:39](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=879) I appreciate it. I appreciate what you've done, the profession that you've taken on. But I want you to understand one thing about this profession. It's selfless. It's not just about you. It's about the men and women to your front and rear, to your left and right. It's also about the people, if you look over your shoulder behind you, who are not wearing uniforms.

[15:11](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=911) See, those are the people that you wake up every day, go to work for, to make sure that they're safe. we have to have an understanding of community. We have to understand the people that we're serving. We also have to understand that when we show up to a job, we see people on their worst days. This is where we need to have that level of compassion, courtesy, providing common sense to

[15:42](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=942) situations that seem senseless, showing up with empathy and making sure that you're professional in every single thing that you do. With that, there are two words that I would tell you, especially being a new officer. Slow down. Just slow down. When we do things too quickly, we make mistakes. There's nothing wrong with slowing down.

[16:13](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=973) Take a deep breath before you go into that job, understanding what you're there for. To our field training officers, slow them down. But your job is extremely important. I don't believe there's anyone here who has forgotten their FTO, good or bad. You are their introduction to the streets from the academy. You are the ones that make sure that that transition is seamless.

[16:46](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1006) You're the one who are going to teach them the skills that they need that's going to keep them safe for the rest of their days. You will also be providing information to help them integrate into the community with an understanding that they're there to keep everyone safe. To the sergeants, you are now everyone's mother, father.

[17:19](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1039) you're the parents now so remember when you gave someone a hard time when you were a PO it's your turn trust me you'll see some challenges out there and I'm sure you've seen some already but those challenges build character they don't just create chinks in the armor you build character and strength around those things to our new lieutenants you have to make sure that when you're a watch commander

[17:50](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1070) field lieutenant that all of our officers out there have instruction coming from the top. You're there to not only hold them accountable, but to provide help, to provide information, mentorship. We have a newly promoted captain. Your job is to make sure that you're delivering the message from up the chain.

[18:25](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1105) As a captain in the district, there's so much that you have to do and so many things that you have to pay attention to. Everybody's looking at you, be it administrative or boots on the ground. Do that job with pride, knowing that you are the conduit between the command staff and our officers in the field. To the command staff, you showed greatness over this past year, and we expect to see more.

[19:07](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1147) All of these people who are here right now wearing these uniforms, it's our responsibility. They're ours. We work for them. And we need to make sure that we provide them with everything they need to succeed. You will have some rough days, and I'm sure a lot of you have. Over the past five years, I know for a fact you've had some rough days.

[19:37](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1177) I've had those days, too. This is the Department in Reform. So when you have those rough days, when people are speaking ill of you, when people tell you that they don't want you there, when people tell you they don't like you, they don't hate you, or that they do hate you, remember this. Remember the job that you're here for.

[20:07](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1207) Remember the victims and those people who have been victimized by crime. You are more important to them than you know. So on those days where you feel like you want to give it all up, I would tell you to do two things. One, take a trip to 35th Street headquarters and look into that star case and see the stars of those officers who have given their lives protecting this city.

[20:38](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1238) It's a reminder of how important and how noble this job is. It helps you to understand why you need to keep going, why you need to build a level of resilience that helps you maintain the peace. You also need to look to the faces of those victims when you show up. And remember their faces. At these graduations, I always love to hear the young people, the babies, making noise.

[21:17](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1277) I'd like to believe that that's them calling out for our new officers to understand that you're there for them, to make sure that their future is safe. Now, they could just be asking for ice cream. I don't know. But. But either way, you know that you are there for him, for them. It's important. I can't tell you how important it is to keep this city safe, to keep these children safe, because they are the future.

[21:58](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1318) I heard in the speech, remember your why. Your why is why you took the job. Your why is why you keep the job. Your why is why you continue the job. Why do you deal with criticism and return to work? Why do you see people on their worst days and return to work? Why do we see some of the most horrific crimes possible and you come back?

[22:34](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1354) Because your why is greater than that of most people. Your why is outstanding. Why did you take on a profession where you put the lives of others before your own? Why did you take on a profession that's as dangerous as this profession is and walk around proud? Because it takes a person who has an exemplary character and an exemplary human being,

[23:12](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1392) and that's what will make you an exemplary officer. Continue to protect our city and always remember your why. Always remember why you're here. You're powerful, courageous. Display that with professionalism like we all look here today. Continue this throughout your careers. Don't get lost because, as I've said before, if you lose your why, you will lose your way. We can't afford that.

[23:50](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1430) Look out for each other, take care of each other, speak to each other, talk to one another. We see someone going off the rails, step up, have a conversation, because that's what we're here for. Lastly, when we do this job, the best way to do it is in lockstep with our community members. With all of our people, listen to what they have to say. You'd be surprised and shocked what you would learn. We're a family. There's a CPD family, but there's also a community family out there.

[24:25](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1465) We will work together to make this city better and safer as we go along. Lastly, two words that you need to hear that you never hear enough. Thank you. Thank you for taking on the profession. Thank you for doing the job. And thank you. for being great. Continue to do so. With that, I'm going to introduce the mayor of the great city of Chicago, Mayor Brandon Johnson. Thank you.

[25:04](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1504) Thank you, Superintendent Snelling, and good morning, everyone. Thank you for your inspiring words, Superintendent Snelling, and your leadership and your 33 years of service to this beloved city. I do want to acknowledge all of the elected officials that are here today. my Deputy Mayor of Community Safety, Garyon Gatewood, and to the entire Chicago Police Department command staff, thank you all for your leadership and your commitment to safety in our beloved city. I'm honored to be here and celebrate the milestone with all of you.

[25:39](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1539) To the women and men who are graduating today, congratulations. Congratulations on completing your training and joining a proud legacy of service. And to those who are being promoted today, congratulations on this recognition of your achievements and your commitment to this department. And on behalf of our entire city, to all our officers and command staff, thank you for answering the call to serve and to protect our communities.

[26:10](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1570) This is a great day for Chicago. Our entire city is strengthened by each of you as you step up to serve and continue to serve. This is no small task that you are embarking upon, but everyone on this stage and I have full confidence in your ability to build trust and safety and stand up for the most vulnerable amongst us. Our graduating officers have prepared and worked hard to reach this

[26:43](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1603) moment. And for that, we have an incredible amount of gratitude. Our newly promoted officers and detectives, lieutenants, and commanders have proven themselves to be leaders and dedicated public servants. And everyone here is fueled by your compassionate heart, your brave spirit, all to make a positive difference in our beloved city. As you continue to uphold the principles of this profession, as you continue to lean on one another for support each and every day,

[27:16](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1636) that in and of itself will ensure that you will continue to make the positive differences that we so desperately need in our society today. You need no reminder that your service and impact on our city is vitally important to the overall security and vibrancy of our city. As a public servant, I certainly know that you don't always see the full impact of your work, but trust and believe that our communities can feel your impact.

[27:49](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1669) With every call you respond to and every resident that you help, you make our city safer and stronger, a place for everyone to live, work, and thrive. together. And you leave nothing behind. You bring your experiences, your expertise with you every single day, and you are in line with a legacy of officers. You are the next generation of officers that will show what is possible in this city. And for generations to come, you serve with integrity

[28:25](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1705) and respect and compassion so those have a guiding light of why they wish to join you along this journey. As you go out about your duties, whether you are a new officer or advancing in the ranks, I want you to keep something in mind. These are very challenging times for our communities. It's going to be more important now than ever to lead with focus and to ensure that we build trust and partnerships.

[28:57](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1737) At a time when many seek to divide us, you will be the uniting force to ensure that our democracy remains intact. Because you're not just enforcing the law or simply just protecting our streets. You are building relationships and working collaboratively with our community members to achieve lasting peace and safety. Chicago, Chicago, the greatest freaking city in the world.

[29:28](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1768) We are a model and example for the world. We have our challenges, yes. And so that requires not just law enforcement, but the full force of government to collaborate to ensure that our communities are protected and provided for. And my administration is taking a full force of government approach to build safer, resilient communities in partnership with businesses, philanthropy, faith communities, fellow Chicagoans, and, of course, our public safety agencies.

[29:59](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1799) As a result of our collaborative strategies and investments in our communities, as well as this data-driven approach responding strategically to the violence in our communities, I'm proud to say that we have seen reductions of all major categories of crimes in this city continue to go down. We are making progress and we are doing it together. So I want to thank you for being on the front lines. This effort cannot be won without you.

[30:31](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1831) In doing so, though, it does take an extraordinary amount of courage and selflessness. And for that, you are an inspiration to all of us. And for that, I do thank you. And one last thing, to the families and the loved ones who are celebrating with us today. Thank you for cheering on our graduates, our officers, and thank you for your enduring support and the advancement of their careers. I think I speak on behalf of the entire city when I say that they cannot do these jobs without you.

[31:06](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1866) And we are all in this ecosystem together to build a better, stronger, and a much safer Chicago together. Each and every one of you, you bring more to this job than just your badge. Sunday school teachers, business owners, you coach Little League, you support your family and other families. That is the Chicago way. So today I congratulate you, all of you, as officers, detectives, lieutenants, commanders.

[31:37](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=1897) I look forward to continuing to partner with you. Let's do it the way Chicago knows how to do it. Let's be the best example that we can be for the world. That even in the midst of these challenges and the dark times that are in front of us, we know that the promise of light will come through the collective work that we demonstrate, not just in this room, not just in this hall, but in the streets of Chicago. Let's continue to build a rising, better, stronger, more inclusive society through your leadership.

[1:21:07](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=4867) We will now conclude our ceremony with a benediction and the retiring of the colors. After the benediction and the retiring of the colors, please remain in place until the dais and the department command personnel have filed out. Fr. Dan Brandt will deliver the benediction.

[1:21:38](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=4898) Please rise and remain standing until the retiring of the colors. Those standing up on this stage have been to quite a few of these graduation ceremonies and always get a charge out of the cheers and the screams from the crowd. Today I saw something I've never seen before, and that was back in the corner in the choir, in the loft. Somebody actually had a custom-made banner that was hanging, and I thought that was remarkable.

[1:22:12](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=4932) Very proud families here today. Some of the noise that was made earlier was quite impressive, especially when I heard the name of Kari Moore. Where's his family? Oh, now you're so quiet. I'd like the Moore family to know one of our traditions here in the police department, and that is whoever has the loudest family gets to come up on stage and show us their talent by doing 100 sit-ups and push-ups right here with me standing on their back. today we all join in that great pride that your families have exhibited

[1:22:46](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=4966) great pride that you should feel in your hearts reminds me of a story of three young lads who were bragging about their fathers first kid so proud of his dad he said my dad is chicago policeman he's the fastest guy i know he can chase down a bad guy and put him half his age and put him in jail second kid says that's nothing my dad's a chicago firefighter he's so fast he can run up the stairs of the Willis Tower, Willis, pronounced Willis, or pronounced, spelled W-I-L-L-I-S, but pronounced Sears, excuse me,

[1:23:17](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=4997) he can run up those stairs in 15 minutes flat and the third kid says, that's nothing. My dad is so fast, he works for streets and sanitation. He gets off work at four every day, but he's home by noon. Mr. Mayor, that is just a joke, I swear. Why don't we continue that pride now in a moment of remembering God's blessing upon us. We're proud to have God in our presence here this day, of course, as we invoke his name.

[1:23:48](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=5028) And we pray, of course, for these new promoted officers and members, of course, also for our brand new officers. Thank you for choosing God's work. Lord God, we beg your blessing upon these men and women. May they continue to carry out your work. Grant these new officers happy, healthy, prosperous, and most of all, safe careers as Chicago police officers. And finally, we pray for blessings upon members of the military who are away from their families, and of course, the members of this department and departments throughout our nation who are working this very moment, Lord, to keep these officers safe.

[1:24:21](https://www.chicagopolitics.org/mayor/videos/JOrx6qgXdj0?t=5061) And all this we pray in your most holy name, for you live and reign forever and ever. Amen. And the Lord be with you. may almighty God bless you protect you from all evil and bring you one day to everlasting life
