Thank you. Vice chair Yeah, you stole my thunder actually was wondering about the funding as well. Um Yeah, that's actually all I had I think separately through. the chair. I think some some of us have questions as to how. decisions are made with the capital funding, especially when we talk about the bond funding and some Street skates happening on Tiff, but that's more tangential. So, um, yeah, I'd be in support of this. But if you could send you the chair any information on that that be helpful, yes. chairman hop chairman Hopkins 47th in Ashland or the Daemon? Well, we've been back and forth to different committee licenses and everything. So I and everything, so I thought I was a non-committee, but thank you. Um, um chairman. First of all, I want to say I want to thank the mayor for um making this election. Revenue, um is a man of integrity and character but importantly, uh, what I appreciate about this. importantly, uh, what I appreciate about this is that his footprint goes from the west side to the south side of Chicago. There are times we um appoint people that um, maybe favorable to the South Side only Southside people know then there's people that only know, then there's people that only Westside people know, but there's nothing like having somebody that has relationships throughout the city of Chicago and uh, Reverend, Reverend Michael EDI has that um, the other part is just he's a pastor what's important to me for this. just he's a pastor what's important to me for this position is that he's a business-minded man. He has a business mind and we must make sure that we have people um at C. and we must make sure that we have people um at CTA, um, especially sitting on the board that can ask and answer questions, uh, relating to the business of the CTA and I have no doubt unequivocally that um, And Michael it can't do that. So. And Michael it can't do that. So, um, I am definitely in support of this. support of this, um appointment and I and I I hope my colleagues join. colleagues join me and and supporting it. Thank you so much. Vice chairman Thank you. Uh, sorry. Thank you, very Thank you. Uh, sorry, thank you very much. Um, thank you so much, uh, Mr. Edie for being much, uh Mr. Ed for being here with us. Um, I do appreciate uh, the the nomination for this appointment. Um, I think for those of us who even today kind of some of the public comment, um there there seems to be a lot of questions, comment, um, there there seems to be a lot of questions related to The public's confidence and how CTA Works. Um, so I have a couple questions just I want our background, uh, When's the last time you were on CTA bus? When's the last time you were on CTA bus trains or like how frequently now do you utilize the system? to say To say this. I'm not as frequently Frequently, utilizing the system, uh and and say recent. days. They're always those instances where for what 1 reason or another I do use the bus transportation, but I've had Decades of experience uh in in interacting with Decades of experience, uh in in interacting with CTA and uh being a pastor uh, being a pastor, uh, I have congregants that are communicated to me all the time. In fact even in my uh coming before you today. Uh, I had the opportunity to sit with youth and adults all that utilize. public transportation and Public transportation and we covered many of the areas that I tried to raise. Okay. Thank you. I appreciate that. I think um as we're thinking about people who are going to be in the transit board. I think 1 of the questions I I have is um, can we get a commitment of riding it more frequently because I actually think it's really important for someone like you who's had the experience before of what CTA was like to see what it looks like now because I you know, I myself I'm 44 years old and I remember what it was like riding buses. and trains everywhere and how the experience is different now. now that I think someone that's got your experience. riding it before uh, and seeing what it's like now. I think it would help inform a lot of the it it would help understand a lot of the critique and so, um, would you commit to uh some level of commit to uh, some level of riding it more regularly to get a sense of what it's like Yeah, I would not have any problem. Yeah, I would not have any problem with that. Uh because I am a person of the community. So, you know, I could ride a bus today and more than likely. bus today and more than likely encounter a a number of people. U that I will be very well acquainted with and uh, even uh encounters that would may arise, uh, it would not be anything. anything new for me to experience or Witness. Awesome. Thank you the uh also. Awesome. Thank you the uh also because of your experience as a pastor and the ability to congregate. as a pastor and the ability to congregate different groups of people that all use the system. Uh, I really appreciate your your part of answer the last question as a really making sure it's in touch with what's on the ground and what people are experiencing in uh, you know, for example, we have a quarterly hearing with the CTA board president here as part of this committee. Uh, and the first question we asked them is how often They Ride the trains and buses and I'll say I was not necessarily pleased with their answer, but I think the commitment and the connection answer but I think the commitment and the connection you have 2 Neighbors on the ground is actually very key. And so, uh, do you have a vision of what it looks like to kind of have Community engagement as it relates to CTA that could inform uh, could inform uh your position in fact, I'm so glad that you asked me that question because I did give great thought to it and again as I say I had I had already kind of uh, uh kind of tested. I had already kind of uh, uh kind of tested the water in many respects with congregants. Uh, many respects with congregants, uh from my congregation and community. Community, uh 1 of the things that I see could be very helpful and important and it may be somewhat a little naive but I think that there needs to be a type of ridership. of conduct 1 of the things that was often raised. And in my conversation, what are the things that? on the trains? And uh, and I know that uh, you know, everyone does not appreciate certain. everyone does not appreciate certain things in the same way, but I think that if we um, uh, way, but I think that if we um, uh introduce concepts of that sort, certainly that sort certainly through the schools, um, making it, part of of some of their Orient. part of of some of their orientation, uh through churches certainly and through uh community centers. certainly and through uh, community centers making it kind of a focus on what should be the writer's code of conduct. uh on on on trains and how they contribute uh to the safety and all 1 of the things that 1 of the uh, adults said to me there was certainly adults that talked about their negative encounters, but 1 of the adults said to me that they have more positive. more positive encounters because they engage C. more positive encounters because they engage CTA Personnel more positively and so I think that it's a 2-way street. 3 uh between a writer's code of conduct but also a type of uh CTA Personnel or uh, CTA Personnel orientation in terms of customer service. Yeah, I Yeah. I I love that answer. I think the more we interact with the folks. with the folks that work CTA the more we understand their experiences and then when we think about safety, um, it is key. So, I I really appreciate key. So I I really appreciate that as well. Um, I I also I appreciate that uh to Alderman Moore's point. appreciate that uh to Alderman Moore's Point, uh, kind of your breath, uh goes from the south to the West Side. I will also remind some of our folks here we will also remind some of our folks here. We have a north side. So, uh, I'd love to partner with you because I think Transportation when we think about public transportation is what connects our city together, so it's what connects our city together. So it's less segregated. It's what brings us north side of the South and It's what brings us north side of the south and west side and vice versa and to want to make sure that we partner in ways to hear all the different experiences to get going better. Um in that vein, I have a question. That's uh, I probably got 2 more questions 1 about connect. uh, I probably got 2 more questions 1 about connecting the north to south and the West Side through a Western Avenue bus Rapid Transit. So having a dedic. a dedicated bus lane. That'll go from north south. a dedicated bus lane that'll go from north south and and obviously being Western tap and Os. How do you obviously being Western tap and Os how do you feel about uh support for having that kind of endeavor? support for having that kind of endeavor having a bus dedicated line? dedicated line all along Western to help folks connect from 1 part of town of the other. Well, I'mma tell you something he just so happens. That's 1 of my routes. I travel when I often want to escape the uh, uh Expressway. Traffic, I will take my path from the west side. Traffic, I will take my path from the West Side around Douglas Boulevard. Douglas Boulevard around there right past 26 in, California. leading right into the Western Street. leading right into the Western Street Corridor shooting straight up Western and anywhere that I need to go any other place, uh, whether it is to the east or to the west and I'll take that up to 5. and I'll take that up to 55 Street or whichever wherever I'm going. I'm going so I could strongly support a West dedicated. Western Avenue route, uh, because I use it even in my own. Western Avenue route, uh, because I use it even in my own private vehicle. Yeah, I I love. Yeah, I I love I love those answers. And so I really appreciate. appreciate your sincerity your connection to community and we look forward to to partnering as we as we work to create a public. a public trans a greater public transportation system. because I'll admit and I I apologize for some of my feeling. when you said that you rode the bus at 7 years old on your own I 1 I was at I admired it I was inspired by it and I feared a 7 year old on their own on. feared a 7 year old on their own on the bus these days and I want to make sure that we partner together. So that fear doesn't 1 that exists in my heart and we can make sure that our kids can take the The school to get back home. And so I I really appreciate the heart with which you you came forward and look. the heart with which you you came forward and look forward to partnering with you. So I I'll be in support. Thank you. Thank you. Bye. Thank you chair. Thank you. Bye. Thank you chairman Urban followed by Conway. Thank you. Uh, thank you Mr. Chairman. Uh also, uh, just uh glad to support this appointment. Um, unfortunately, uh exchanging a 1 member for another. Uh, Johnny Miller, uh, whom I've known for a number of years, but I I don't think I have found a the America found a better person to replace. I have found a the America found a better person to replace a pastor Johnny or meloan. Uh, Pastor Eddie both are strong members of the Westside Community both have been uh, very strong advocates. strong advocates for uh positivity in CTA. strong advocates for uh positivity in CTA from Contracting from jobs and from other pairs. from jobs and from other perspectives. And again, just glad to support this appointment and uh, look forward for a great favor of recommendation. Uh, great favor of recommendation, uh when that time comes, thank you. Thank you. Chairman, Irv. Thank you chairman Irving Conway followed by chairman Harris. I like that. I'm just Conway like Cher or Madonna. I'm all I'm all for that. Just a 1 just a 1 1 name that works. Um, Mr. Alderman no, no, no, no, no, no, no chairman and Mr. Chair. Chairman, I I was I was I was sincere yet play. Chairman, I I was I was I was sincere yet playful in my in my remarks. Um, appreciate you, uh, Reverend needy. Um, uh, I I wanted to really appreciate your your comments about riding the CTA to school. Um, I don't think my mom. riding the CTA to school. Um, I don't think my mom was was going with 7 years old, but from fourth grade through high school. I did ride the the CTA bus to school. school. I did ride the the CTA bus to school, uh the school every day. So, uh, the CTA is certainly something that is is close to my my heart. So my uh question or questions probably really, uh, follow right on Vice chair Vasquez follow right on Vice chair vasquez's questions now the trans Transit board is of course charged with oversight. CTA. Uh You know day-to-day. You know day-to-day leadership of the CTA. What crit? What criteria do you think should be used on whether the president of the CTA should be? removed or retained the criteria for a president of the board to be retained or removed. Yeah. removed. Yeah the president of the CTA in particular. Okay. Well, uh, I I'm I'm going to just respond and as it is I propose and hypothetical. is I propose and hypothetical, uh that you are opposing to me and so me. And so I'm going to respond, uh as uh, me. And so I'm going to respond, uh as uh that um in light of what CTA represents in my mind in terms of service. I view it. I view it, uh that it it's primary oper. I view it, uh that it it's primary operation is about servicing. It's about moving. servicing. It's about moving people from 1 place to another uh is about moving them safely. It's about moving them in clean. Uh, clean, uh equipment meaning buses and trains. Uh, it's about uh, uh providing the type of of uh Protection security. security visually, uh that that gives security visually, uh, that that gives a person uh a sense of safety. of Safety and Security. It's about uh, having Personnel who know how to interact and engage with community. So I'm saying all of that to say that I view leadership in that particular. particular role takes all of those kinds of things. particular role takes all of those kinds of things into account and in taking those things, account and in taking those things into account, We know that there's a cost. we know that there's a cost Associated to everything that is done. So then that means we have to be prude. is done. So then that means we have to be prudent about what uh, uh, what uh, uh revenues are available. What? what uh, uh revenues are available what um, uh expenses are going to impact. going to impact those revenues and so we have to make sure going to impact those revenues. And so we have to make sure that we can uh operate uh, the this transportation service. in a profitable manner. and I'm certain that uh, it would also be the And I'm certain that. Uh, it would also be the the the charge of a a of leadership at this level to identify. charge of a a of leadership at this level to identify other funds which uh would uh be found. I'm sure certainly on a a federal level. federal level, uh state level and that those funds will be leveraged uh to address. leveraged, uh to address Innovative Progressive. leveraged, uh to address Innovative Progressive, uh kinds of ideas and vision, but also to address the uh, the service needs, uh that it takes to operate. service needs, uh, that it takes to operate a an entity of this sort. So that is my hypothetical response to your hypothetical inquiry. And I and I did ask at hypothetically. And I and I did ask at hypothetically on on purpose. Um Well, I I but in in your hypothetical. Well, I I but in in your hypothetical answer you went straight to the financial. Um said to the financials as opposed to the leadership, but I'll ask. I'll ask you do do you think that the um, I'll ask you do do you think that the um the finance of the CTA are Are in a good place to you know at this. Are in a good place to you know at this point and what role do you think the leadership plays in that? Well, let me just say this. Um, I am certain that as I come closer, uh to the center. closer, uh to the center of things that I'm going to be. closer, uh to the center of things. Then I'm going to be brought up to speed with many things that I am unaware of. Uh, but certainly I do. Uh, but certainly I do follow what what is off the communicated to communicated through the media and and that uh, communicated through the media and and that uh being active as I am in the community about things that impact, uh the rez residents. Uh, I I I'm certain that again. I'm going to find out more but I do say that we need uh a find out more but I do say that we need uh, a better Services, uh, and I'm certain that equipment is is wearing from time to time as any equipment would and that there's going to be a need for replacement of that equip. going to be a need for replacement of that equipment and that's going to come at a cost. So uh again, as I'm certain and I will As I'm certain and I will give far more familiar with things. things a as as I may get more exposed. Uh, I think I will be. I think I will be far better equipped to respond to. I think I will be far better equipped to respond to that but in light of just what it takes. in light of just what it takes to run anything you have to uh balance the books. uh balance the books and uh, and and that will require uh a number of things you got. a number of things. You got to either increase your revenues or you going to have to redo your expenses. Do you have a do you have a relationship with the current presidency? president CTA? the The current president. Yeah with President k no, I do not. Okay. That's that's all my question, Mr. No, I do not. Okay. That's that's all my question Mr. Chairman. Thank you. Thank you, Reverend Edy. Looking forward to to supporting. forward to to supporting your your nomination. Thank you. Um, I want to thank the mayor for this appointment. Um, Pastor Eddie never does anything. Pastor Eddie never does anything halfway. Whatever he does. He's going to put his heart and his soul is energy. is energy and to doing it to make sure that he is the best at it. And so I feel confident. at it. And so I feel confident in this appointment, uh having worked with Pastor. having worked with Pastor Ed over the last 16 or more years. Um, and um, I'm going to support his appointment wholeheartedly. So thank you Pastor Eddie for uh jumping the pool. Thank you, Alderman Harris. Thank you. Thank you Alderman Harris. Thank you chairman ottoman hopping worth. Thank you chair. Thank you Pastor for being here and I'm I'm very inspired. I'm very inspired um by your love of the CTA and your experience with it. I also am a fan of the CTA coming from the Edgewater area. Um, my kids use a CTA to get to Lane Tech and to Jones and their high school years, and I I really want every student to have a great experience. really want every student to have a great experience on our buses and our trains no matter where they need to go or um, you know, whatever language access they need. I I hope that you will take that into account as you look. you will take that into account as you look to to ways to increase ridership because um, you know, for instance in the in in my part of town we have the in in my part of town, we have a very diverse, um Ward where um, we want more people riding. where um, we want more people riding the L. Um, we also have an Edgewater, uh, the red purple modernization the first time in a 100 years that our tracks are going to be improved so We're we're very much looking forward to. We're we're very much looking forward to the end of that program. program, um wrapping up in a couple of years. Um, I I wanted to ask you kind of on the line. Um, I I wanted to ask you kind of on the line of what Alder Vasquez was saying, you know. Vasquez was saying, you know, I I would like a commitment from you that you are willing to um, from you that you are willing to um experience what's happening. Um, happening, um in our public transit system. Um, you know, I I I've had a great time. I I've had a great time exploring, uh, Chicago including on the 22 and the 50 and the Jeffrey jump. It's it's fantastic where you can go and where you can go in Chicago using our public transit system. system, and I think that we all need to feel ownership of it. and I think that we all need to feel ownership of it. Um, but right now what what I'm seeing and what I'm hearing in my office are for instance a a young woman came to my office just yesterday and told me a story that was just completely harrowing she was on the L and other women came up and assaulted her. This is in the worst part about it. She said it was in the middle of women's History Month. And no. And no 1 else on the train did anything. This is this is wrong. This is a a culture of um, and what happened was at the end of it. She looked around and she said why didn't why didn't anyone do anything? They said they didn't know. they didn't know what to do. They didn't know what was happening. I think that we have to work. to create To create an environment where people understand that. to create an environment where people understand that you are obligated to take care of 1 another and I think that the CTA is doing that and so many great ways like through their second chance program. I think that's Fant. their second chance program. I think that's fantastic. We need to keep promoting things like that. But also the everyday experience of what Chicagoans are feeling right now. I don't feel like I just don't feel like we are working fast enough. To help that especially for our students. to help that especially for our students especially for women, and I would I would like to know if just again can you affirm that you're going? you affirm that you're going to come out and experience? what everyday Chicagoans are feeling um by what everyday Chicagoans are feeling, um by just using our Transit System. Yeah, I I can commit to that. Uh, you know it it's just a practice. practice of mind. It's hard to be able to. practice of mind. It's hard to be able to address anything speak to anything. speak to anything unless you are. Deeply involved in it. And so, uh, that would be something that I would see. that I would see most necessary, uh to do and that's what I was speaking to earlier and that was exactly was speaking to earlier. And that was exactly 1 of the ex, uh inst. uh instances or it events that uh in my discussion with adults came up about and occur. adults came up about and occurred. No, that's why I was saying I think that there needs to be a type of ridership code of conduct. and and and and again, uh people and and and and again, uh, people will only embrace it according to whatever their gauge of barometer is about. uh, uh the value of human life and and and those sorts of events, but Those sorts of events, but I think that it is something that needs to be done part of. that needs to be done part of some campaign that goes through the faith. through the faith community churches mosques synagogue. Etc. Uh, uh, Etc, uh, uh something to that sort so That sort so I think we do have to commit to getting everybody on. everybody on the same page and everybody on the same page. And uh, it's it's quite probably I might sound a little naive in that. Uh, but got to go for it. So I would commit and I would even want to uh, see how that can be implemented in terms of that. righteous ship code of conduct. Thank you. Thank you, very thank you cheer. Yeah. Yeah, thank you chairman. Uh, Reverend needy I uh really enjoyed. enjoyed your uh description of your lifelong. enjoyed your uh description of your lifelong experience with CTA and uh the fact that you with CTA. And uh, the fact that you had mentioned Riverview, uh is delightful. We got to mention of Riverview and the 47th in Damon County. and the 47th in Damon County Fair all in the same meeting brings back a lot of memories for some of us. So, uh, thank you for that. And I and I relate to your lifelong, uh experience as a CTA writer. Um, but I I do just want to uh writer reiterate the fact that uh Alderman Conway did reiterate the fact that uh, Alderman Conway did ask you a very specific question it was very specific question. It was hypothetical, but it was very specific. Uh, and you did not answer that question sir. Um, and I'm not going to criticize you for that. I'm not going to hold that against you. to hold that against you um, because this is a confirmation hearing confirmation hearing and the purpose of the confirmation hearing is primarily to assess your qualifications. hearing is primarily to assess your qualifications and your decision-making capability. Um, it's not necessarily for those of us as much as we would like to uh to pin. And what decisions you will actually? And what decisions you will actually make you need to get in there and you need to see the landscape? there and you need to see the landscape. Um, and uh, you know, you're you're going to make those decisions. know, you're you're going to make those decisions, uh in that capacity, but clearly, uh, the motivation behind alderman. Alderman Conway's question my questioning here as well as alderwoman may not happen worth and others. Uh, it it cannot be lost on you sir. You're assuming a leadership position of an agency in crisis. There's no question about that. We need problem solvers. We need people to take the Helm of this agency. Helm of this agency regardless of what leadership changes may or may not occur in the future, uh, the current condition. conditions are not only unacceptable. It's embarrassing. It's embarrassing for a city of Chicago. It's embarrassing for a city of Chicago to have a Transit Agency that is as dysfunction. Agency that is as dysfunctional and failing before our very eyes. eyes that is what is currently happening. So I'm not asking you to tell me what you're going to do, uh, when you assume this leadership position what I'm seeking and I think my colleagues are is that you are fully cognizant of the gravity of the situation. are fully cognizant of the gravity of the situation that you're walking into and that you are committed 100% uh to being a problem. being a problem solver and to seeking solutions to turn. this mess around. Thank you, Mr. Chairman. thank Thank you Jeremy. Um am I able to respond? Thank you, Jeremy. Um am I able to respond to yes? Yes. Sorry about this. So go ahead. I Sorry about this. So go ahead. Yeah, I'd like to respond and simply because he just stated that I did not answer it and I do apologize if I did not maybe I do apologize. If I did not maybe I wasn't as clear as you have now made me clear. you have now made me clearer as to what the inquiry was. but but just let me say this. but but just let me say this I come from a uh reference. but just let me say this I come from a uh reference of um, what the worst can be. Uh, I uh, I I come from uh, uh as a pastor. I've been pastoring, uh for now 45 years I Pastor in a community that many uh would would would would choose to write off or have many things to say in terms of where? it is and how terrible it is. it is and how terrible it is and what circumstances exist and how to and how deplorable someone might want to view it. Well, uh, we have as a leader. We have gone into a community. community, uh, and an area of a community. Uh, that was uh gangs. gangs, uh, drugs infested the whole deal, uh, just as bad of a situation. of a situation is terrible embarrassing that you say of a situation as it could be. Well, I would invite you to come uh to that same. uh to that same area where I arrived and I showed up it was nothing. dirt and glass and garbage and trash and uh drug trafficking and and the whole deal and we uh have now, uh turned that into a a a coming Oasis in the sense that have, uh, put up some uh, 18 million dollars of development very small. very small amount in light of what you guys deal with but I'm just talking about what a person has to do. I'm just talking about what a person has to do when you come from nothing and you got to try to make something out of it. of it and and and you have to work through every headwind that is coming at you. that is coming at you with everything that says you can't arrive. Well we have uh, put a arrive. Well, we have uh, put a a facility there that is servicing the community. servicing the community in every respect. We have trained over 4. we have trained over 44 Building Maintenance life skills the whole deal money management the whole deal. We've developed 36 units of housing, uh, small budget of some 14 million. million dollars stabilizing. million dollars stabilizing 36 families and now prep. now to do Harvest Homes, too. now to do Harvest Homes too, 555 more units of affordable housing. housing another budget of some 35 million. housing another budget of some 35 million dollars and that whole area was nothing. glass garbage trash and all so I only say that to say we will approach uh the CTA in will approach uh, the CTA in a similar way. We're used to working with nothing. We're used to coming in to headwind. We're used to embarrassing situ. We're used to embarrassing situations. We're used to transforming things from nothing. transforming things from nothing into an oasis, so I welcome this opportunity to sit on a board that will be focused on making public. focused on making public transportation like it's never been imagined in the city of Chicago. So, been imagined in the city of Chicago. So I welcome this opportunity, and I'm committed opportunity and I'm committed to it. Thank you best. Um. Next we have a vice mayor Bernett. Uh, he's very involved. Uh, he's very involved, uh in on the west side. I mean, I can't say too much more than what he has said already, but he he is reshaping the West Side. Um, he's very holistic he care about the community on so many levels, uh, he fight for justice and fairness. Um, he so being on the CTA board for which CTA has uh some for which CTA has uh, some diversity going on over there. I know that uh, Bishop Eddie would be a person. know that uh, Bishop Eddie would be a person to that will speak up for everyone. Um, he helps 1 of the things that I know he would be concerned about is the uh program that they have for returning residents over there. Uh, revani is is very into helping folks who need help. is very into helping folks who need help whether no matter where they come from what mistakes they made. where they come from what mistakes they made he pushed to help them to be better.
